Amy

Asif Kapadia's stunning follow up to 'Senna' about the life and death of Amy Winehouse confirms him as one of the best documentarians of his generation. Sticking to the same formula that gave such freshness to 'Senna', Kapadia chooses not to show on camera any of the interviewees that narrate Amy's story instead using just the sound of their voices laid over a rich bed of archive footage and stills. This technique allows for so much more subject imagery to be crammed in and yet also gives the film breathing space - time to slow footage down and linger on the finer details. He draws our attention to Amy's wonderful lyrics, something she is not always given sufficient credit for, by having graphic text appear on screen throughout her performances.
