'71

Yann Demange's powerful feature debut '71 for Warp Films is thoroughly deserving of it's 9 BIFA nominations this year.

It's one of the most visceral films I have ever seen. The audience are swept along with Jack O'Connell's Private Hook as he becomes separated from his unit during a riot. The straightforward narrative allows the audience to fully immerse themselves in the fine detail of a very realistic looking Belfast at the height of the troubles.

It's extremely confident directing for a first film and definitely marks Demange out as one to watch.
